MY PRIORITIES
I am dedicated to serving the people of the 3rd district on the Fort Collins City Council. My passion for and experience in public service drives my commitment to creating positive change in our community. Together, we can make our city more affordable, make our government more efficient, and encourage sustainable economic growth. With years of experience in local governance, I understand the complexities of our city's needs and am prepared to take action for the betterment of our district.
KEY ISSUES
Resilience from Federal Interference
The federal government is taking unprecedented
actions against states and cities seemingly at random. Our city is going to need to partner with other local jurisdictions and organizations to maintain our quality of life and be prepared to react to the whims of the federal government.
Affordability
Fort Collins has an affordability issue, especially when it comes to housing. Our community is already short of housing to meet demand by thousands of homes for people who want to work and live in Fort Collins.
To meet this demand I will prioritize solutions that include:
-
Encouraging more affordable, higher density development options in corridors that can be served by improved transit service.
-
Prioritize infill - redevelopment of underutilized infrastructure.
-
Respecting the rights of property owners who may want to add rental opportunities within reasonable limits.
-
Improve the time it takes the city to approve development applications and permits.
Climate Resilience
Preserving our environment is crucial for the future of our City and our district. Density is part of the solution - urban sprawl is not only bad for affordability, it's bad for the environment.
We will also need to take action to reduce our city's impact on the environment. I favor incentives over mandates, especially in these times of economic uncertainty. We should also make sure the city's operations are environmentally-friendly in the most cost-effective ways possible.
Fiscal Sustainability
Sales tax makes up one-half of the City's revenue budget (not including utilities). Sales tax revenues are already declining due to economic uncertainty and affordability issues for our residents, while the City's operating costs are increasing. This will make it challenging to provide services at the level our community expects while making progress on issues like affordability, economic development and climate resilience. I will bring a collaborative approach that emphasizes efficiency and fiscally sustainable solutions that will be necessary when we face tough decisions.
Culture, Recreation and Parks
Fort Collins' recreational and cultural assets and programs are a big part of what makes our City such a great place to live. I am committed to making them affordable and keeping them in good shape for our current and future residents to enjoy.
Improve Efficiency
I have implemented and managed organizational efficiency efforts for all of my 20+ years working in local government. It's important that taxpayers have confidence that their money is being spent wisely and as efficiently as possible. While the City is generally run very well, there is always room for improvement. I will advocate for a strong process improvement effort that focuses on:
-
Reducing the steps needed and wait time for development proposals
-
Making it easier to get permits and licenses of all types, such as for special events
-
Breaking down silos between City departments
